In 1989, Kaizad Hansotia revived Gurkha Cigars, a historic brand first created more than a century ago and celebrated for its artisanal craftsmanship. Recognizing an opportunity in the emerging premium cigar market, Hansotia reimagined Gurkha as a symbol of elegance and exclusivity. Today, Gurkha cigars are meticulously handcrafted and designed to be more than a simple indulgence, they represent the pinnacle of luxury in the cigar world.

The Gurkha Soldier

“If a man says he is not afraid of dying, he is either lying, or he is a Gurkha”

As Sam Manekshaw, former Chief of Staff of the Indian Army, once observed, Gurkha soldiers from South Asia have long been renowned for their loyalty, courage, and formidable reputation in battle.

The Gurkhas, Two Centuries of Honor and Bravery

Among the most respected warriors in history, the Gurkhas drew the attention of the British Army nearly two centuries ago. In 1816, Britain formally began recruiting Gurkha soldiers, establishing Nepal as its oldest ally in Asia. By the mid-20th century, Gurkha regiments had earned more than 2,500 awards for their extraordinary bravery during World War II.

Renowned for unmatched skill in close combat, Gurkha soldiers are rarely seen without their iconic weapon, the Kukri, the national blade of Nepal. This distinctive recurve knife, developed in South Asia centuries ago, combines the versatility of a machete and the power of an axe. Typically measuring 10 to 15 inches, its uniquely shaped blade allows it to serve both as a practical tool and a formidable weapon, reflecting the strength and reputation of the warriors who carry it.
